BLOOMINGTON – Game Day,  a new feature this season hosted by Adam Studzinski, gets the sports day started today at 9 a.m. on WJBC 1230 AM and wjbc.com.

The hour-long show, which airs one hour before the ISU pregame show each week, will review high school games from Friday night with live interviews from coaches, along with segments about ISU, Illinois Wesleyan, other college games around the country and the Chicago Bears.

PODCAST: Listen to Coach Brock Spack here about the game.

Illinois State’s football team opens its much-anticipated season today against the University of Iowa of the Big Ten Conference at Kinnick Stadium in an 11 a.m. kickoff.

Coverage begins at 10 with the pregame show on WJBC 1230 AM and wjbc.com with Dick Luedke, Ted Schmitz and Craig Bertsche.

“It will be a good game for us to see where we are at,” said ISU coach Brock Spack. “We have some young guys, but we have some experience too.”

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, the dean of Big Ten coaches with 17 years under his belt, knows what his team is up against.

“I’ve played a lot of tough opening ball games,” he said. “It should be an excellent football game and we’re going to have to be at our best to win this thing.

“We’re playing a team that is very dynamic, very explosive. They have a veteran quarterback (Tre Roberson) and running back (Marshaun Coprich), who are extremely dangerous.”

Also on WJBC, the St. Louis Cardinals’ game with the Pittsburgh Pirates will be joined in progress following the ISU-Iowa game.

Meanwhile, on your computer at wjbc.com, Illinois Wesleyan opens its football season with a 12:30 p.m. kickoff at Franklin, Ind. Eric Stock and Joel Swanson have the call.

Also on wjbc.com, the ISU volleyball team continues play in the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge, Mass., when it takes on Harvard at noon and Rutgers at 3 p.m. And the Normal CornBelters play host to the Schaumburg Bombers at 6:30 p.m. from the CornCrib.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
