BOURBONNAIS – The Chicago Bears wrapped up day six of Training Camp Wednesday in Bourbonnais.

The team is working under a new general manager and head coach as they prepare for the 2015 season. Although the offense struggled in practice Wednesday, quarterback Jay Cutler said the team has done a good job picking up new Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase’s system.

“We’re picking up the language and lingo, what the coaches want us to do. I think Adam, and everybody else, has communicated really clearly our jobs and we’re heading in the right direction,” said Cutler. “Where we’re at, I don’t know exactly, but I know we’re doing the right things each and every day.”

Cutler added Gase’s system is not an easy one to learn.

“It’s not something you’re going to pick up in two, three weeks. You gotta put some time into this one,” Cutler said.

Gase said it’s been a challenge working against the Bears new 3-4 defense.

“They do such a good job of disguising. It’s such a challenge for our guys every day,” said Gase. “We can’t walk out here and just think we’re going to rip them apart because it’s going to be a challenge play in and play out.”

Head Coach John Fox liked the progress of the offense to this point in camp.

“I like that our starting group has not had a turnover yet. We’re not in games or anything, but in practice it’s been something that Coach Gase and the offensive staff have stressed – ball security,” Fox said.

Rookie receiver Kevin White, the Bears’ first round draft pick this year, has yet to practice at Training Camp. He’s been nursing a shin injury. Despite his absence from the field, Gase wasn’t worried about White falling behind.

“His character won’t allow it,” said Gase. “He studies. He’s constantly asking questions in the meetings. Whenever we get a chance to get him out here, then we’ll just see where he is on the field.”

Gase said veteran receiver Alshon Jeffery, who’s expected to become Cutler’s number one target this season, has looked dominate.

“There’s times where he looks unstoppable,” Gase said.

The team returns to practice Thursday morning.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
