SPRINGFIELD – A law recently signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner may help cut down on the number of dead people that receive government benefits.

The law, which takes effect immediately, would assist in keeping dead people off of Medicaid rolls and is something that just makes sense to Republican State Sen. Kyle McCarter of Lebanon.

“You would think this was common sense that you would just do it, but unfortunately it’s true in this state,” McCarter said. “We have actually paid out benefits to people that are dead.

The legislation requires the Illinois Department of Human Services to cross reference the list of public aid recipients with the state’s death records at least once a month. House sponsor, Rep. Dwight Kay, had previously said over several years the state spent tens of millions of Medicaid dollars on people who had died.

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
