PEORIA – The Peoria Chiefs utilized fantastic pitching from three hurlers to beat the Clinton LumberKings 2-0 Wednesday afternoon. The win improves the Chiefs to 17-10 in the second half and 50-45 overall this season with one game left in the series

The Chiefs registered their first hit in the fourth inning when Oscar Mercado led off with a single, which led to a two-run frame against Clinton starter Lukas Schiraldi. Paul DeJong singled to move Mercado to third and Harrison Bader plated him with an RBI single to make it 1-0. Nick Thompson walked to load the bases and Luis Cruz put the Chiefs up 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.

The LumberKings had a chance in the sixth inning against Chiefs starter Dewin Perez. Arby Fields led off with a single, Chris Mariscal flew out, and Pat Leyland singled, which ended Perez’s day. Nick Lomascolo came in relief and struck out both Kristian Brito and Martin Peguero to get out of the jam.

Perez (2-3) allowed no runs on three hits and three walks, striking out four over 5 1/3 innings of work to earn the win. Lomascolo struck out six over two and 2 2/3 hitless innings. Kyle Grana locked down the ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts for his 14th save of the season.

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
