LIHEAP funds may be cut off from state

BLOOMINGTON – State funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program may soon be cutoff.

Mid-central Community Action LIHEAP Director Karen Wright said this is a problem with extreme consequences.

“We’re looking at an issue where people may not have heat or electricity in their homes,” said Wright. “It could cause issues as far as health concerns and then also the dignity of the people.”

Over 150,000 households statewide will not be served if state funds are suspended.

“That’s a huge part of their income,” said Wright. “Where they have to choose being evicted if they don’t pay their rent, going without heat or electricity because they can’t afford their utility bills or having to put food on the table.”

Residents should contact Mid-Central Community Action if they are having trouble paying an electricity bill.

Gov. Rauner has threatened to cut state aid to the program if a budget is not set by July 1.
