NORMAL – The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, dropped the finale of their first home stand of the season by a 3-2 score to the Washington Wild Things on Sunday at the Corn Crib.

Washington scored first as Lee Orr advanced to second on an error as part of his fielder’s choice grounder, then scored on a single to right by Edinson Rincon.

The Wild Things added an unearned run in the third when Daniel Poma reached via error, went to third on a sacrifice and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by C.J. Beatty.

The CornBelters (5-4) evened the score in the fourth inning on an RBI base hit by Santiago Chirino and a bases-loaded bunt single by Cameron Monger.

Washington unknotted the score with a run in the sixth inning as David Popkins walked, went to third on an Austin Wobrock single and scored on a base hit by Daniel Poma.

The CornBelters put two runners aboard in the ninth but came up empty as the Wild Things (2-7) salvaged a game in the series.

Wild Things starter Tim Flight (1-0) worked six innings of six-hit baseball for the win, walking three and striking out seven while giving up both CornBelters runs. Victor Beriguete (0-1) took the loss in relief. Matt Purnell registered the final out for his first save.

The CornBelters take Memorial Day off before beginning a six-game road trip on Tuesday at Schaumburg. The Belters return home for a six-game home stand on Tuesday, June 2.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
