2nd person charged in home invasion, robbery

NORMAL – A man from Normal is spending his 34th birthday behind bars after police arrested him on home invasion and armed robbery charges.

Toby Bernal was booked on Sunday by Normal Police following an incident on May 8. Police say Bernal entered an apartment in the 600 block of Orlando Avenue and got into an altercation with a man who was in the apartment.

Bernal reportedly took the man’s gun and held it to his head before leaving with the man’s wallet, cash, cellphone and prescription drugs. Bernal fled with a woman who was inside the apartment. Katie Welch, 26, was charged last week with armed robbery and aggravated assault.

The two remain in the McLean County Jail – unable to post bond.
