BLOOMINGTON – Tickets go on sale Friday for the David Davis Mansion’s largest annual fundraiser, the Glorious Gardens Festival garden walk.

“The funds we raise help support the continued maintenance on Sarah’s garden and it also helps support all the educational program the mansion does for the school kids during the year,” organizer Donna Dickson said.

Dickson told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin, Sarah’s garden at the mansion is one of 11 Bloomington-Normal gardens that will be on display during the walk, which will be held June 19-20.

Dickson said Sarah’s garden still has 16 original plants that judge Davis’ wife Sarah first planted in the 1870s.

The theme for the 19th annual festival is ‘Hidden treasures, gems in the garden.’

“Our gardeners, they work hard getting ready for this,” Dickson said. “Several of them have a variety of different things throughout their garden. They have statues, artwork – another one has glass globes that are beautiful.”

Tickets can be purchased at the mansion at 1000 Monroe Dr., Bloomington; Casey’s Garden Shop, 1505 N. Main St, Bloomington; Wendell Niepagen Greenhouses and Garden Center, 2010 Fox Creek Rd, Bloomington; The Garlic Press, 108 W. North St, Normal and both Bloomington-Normal Schnuks’ locations.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
