Dental industry anxious about possible Medicaid cuts

SPRINGFIELD – Even without any of the reductions Gov. Bruce Rauner proposed in his budget message, the Medicaid puzzle can be a toughie.

In a hearing which followed the budget speech but which was scheduled long before the governor delivered that speech, dentists and other experts told the Senate Human Services Committee how important dental care is to the overall picture.

There is no cost savings” to excluding adult dental care from Medicaid, said Dave Marsh of the Illinois State Dental Society. “It's minuscule. But the pain and suffering of the population who would be affected by this is staggering

“There is a connection between the mouth and the rest of the body,” said Dr. Bruce Rotter, dean of the SIU School of Dental Medicine. “Approximately a third to a half of adult patients have periodontal disease.”

This stands to be just one of many opportunities for lawmakers to hear – and make – the case to preserve, if not expand, social services in Illinois.
