CHICAGO – People in Illinois may soon need more than just a driver's license to get past airport security. That's because the licenses don't meet the federal rules designed to increase security at airports across the nation.
For example, the state doesn't require people to show their birth certificate when they get their driving credentials. And, it could cost up to $15 million over four-years to put the birth certificate verification system into play.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, anyone who doesn't have a proper license by next year could be required to show another valid ID, like a passport or military ID, when they head to the airport. The state has until October to get their licenses up to par but a DHS spokesman says the state can apply for an extension.
