Sen. Brady believes Rauner has vision for Illinois

BLOOMINGTON – State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) said Illinois' new governor reducing his salary to a dollar might be a small gesture, but it's a sign of how committed Bruce Rauner is to turning the state around.

"A guy like Bruce Rauner could have lived anywhere," said Brady. "Having gotten to know him over the last several months, or year, I know he does have a deep commitment to this state. He has a vision for this state."

Brady told WJBC's Tim Lewis "if you don't have a vision, you'll parish." He believed that with Rauner Illinois has a vision and said the General Assembly will work with him to make progress.

State of the Union

President Obama will make his State of the Union address Tuesday. How much does the annual speech effect state legislators?  Brady said the State of the Union "sets a tone."

"National ramifications effect state ramifications, which effect local ramifications," said Brady. "So if the president comes out with some tax policy that makes people think again about whether or not to make an investment in a capital improvement or something like that, those could have some devastate effects."

Brady added it'll be interesting to see what the president has to say. Especially considering this will be the first time he makes the address with Republicans in control of both the House and Senate.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
