BLOOMINGTON – With some areas of Southern Illinois having no trauma centers, Bloomington-Normal is lucky to have two level two trauma centers to treat those with critical injuries.  However, the Bloomington Normal area is without a Level one trauma center.   Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Lamar Habrouck is working to help more hospitals upgrade their trauma centers or create new trauma centers.

"We've kind of laid the groundwork and said in southern and central Illinois here are some hospitals that you may want to take a deeper dive look at because they already meet some of the criteria and it wouldn't be a very heavy lift to reach this threshhold of certification," said Housbrouck.

The nearest Level one trauma center in our area is in Peoria.  Hasbrouck admits some patients in Illinois have to be flown to Iowa or Indiana to reach a level one trauma center

Hasbrouck says upgrading hospitals can be very expensive, but could save lives as time is of the essence.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
