SPRINGFIELD – More Illinois drivers will be able to simply plead guilty and pay a fine without having to appear in court, and without having to surrender their driver’s licenses as bond, under a law taking effect in 2015.
“A lot of the clerks throughout the state were in support of this bill,” says State Rep. John D’Amico (D-Chicago), the sponsor, “because a lot of the licenses were getting lost.”
The new law does not diminish the seriousness of speeding or running a red light, nor does it affect the fine.
D’Amico says early in his legislative career, a couple of children in his district died in an accident, and some constituents prevailed upon him to try to get the driving age raised to 18. That didn’t happen, but D’Amico has supported many traffic- and safety-related bills.
