BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — Bloomington City Mayor Dan Brady is encouraging residents to give back to the community in honor of Labor Day.
As part of a new initiative, the mayor is challenging those in Bloomington to find time this holiday weekend to volunteer, said city spokesperson Katherine Murphy.
“Labor Day celebrates the value of hard work,” said Mayor Brady. “One of the best ways we can honor that tradition is by serving others. I’m challenging everyone in Bloomington to roll up their sleeves and volunteer. Whether it’s an hour or a full day, every effort makes a difference.”
Murphy said those looking for ways to volunteer can connect with several organizations in Bloomington, including:
- Midwest Food Bank – Pack and distribute food boxes for families in need.
- Habitat for Humanity of McLean County – Join a home build or support the Habitat ReStore.
- Miller Park Zoo & Parks Division – Volunteer with beautification projects or help at the zoo.
- Home Sweet Home Ministries – Assist with meal service or organize donations for families experiencing homelessness.
- West Bloomington Revitalization Project – Support the tool library, bike co-op or neighborhood cleanup efforts.
- Bloomington Parks – Spend time volunteering at or visiting one of Bloomington’s 44 parks, helping with cleanup, beautification or community activities.
Mayor Brady is also inviting volunteers to share photos of their efforts on social media with the hashtag #BloomingtonServes, Murphy said.
