CHICAGO – Schools closed and warming shelters opened in Illinois as bitterly cold subzero temperatures moved into the state.
The National Weather Service has a wind chill warning in effect from the Wisconsin state
line south to Quincy, Lincoln, Champaign and Danville. The rest of the state is under a wind chill advisory.
In response, dozens of schools districts, including Chicago Public Schools, canceled Wednesday classes. Illinois Tollway officials activated road patrols to help stranded motorists.
The weather service says "dangerously cold" wind chills are expected to continue through Thursday morning.
