NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — The union representing some 300 Illinois State University employees will meet with school officials on Wednesday in the hopes of settling a nearly week-long strike.
The meeting Wednesday morning will come one week after workers with AFSCME, Local 1110, formed picket lines across the campus.
A mediator, who was brought in to try to resolve the issue, set up the meeting.
Buildings, grounds and dining services employees have been negotiating with the university for more than a year and last month, the rank and file authorized a strike vote. The strike came hours after both sides presented their last ditch effort and couldn’t reach an agreement.
The union is saying it’s seeking higher pay and a fair contract. University officials say their final offer included multiple wage increases.
In the wake of the strike, ISU has been using external resources to maintain essential services, said ISU spokesperson Chris Coplan.
