NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — The Children’s Discovery Museum in Normal celebrated the opening of their new exhibit, “From Farm to a Healthy Me,” with a ribbon-cutting Thursday afternoon.
“Kids are going to come and enjoy a brand new experience at the Children’s Discovery Museum,” said Beth Whisman, executive director of cultural arts for the Town of Normal. “Our whole second floor has been remodeled with a brand new exhibit called “From the Farm to a Healthy Me.”
The exhibit on the second floor of the museum teaches kids how their food gets to their table, starting with a seed in the ground. They will also be able to explore agricultural technology and science, grocery stores and food trucks, and their own bodies in the Healthy Me section.
The exhibit has been in the works since 2022, when they started early planning. Museum staff are excited that their hard work has come to a close.
“It feels so good to open,” said Whisman. “We started really working on design before we started fabrication in January of this year, and now we’re finally letting kids see it. When they open the door, they get off the elevator, and they see it for the first time. It looks on their face, makes it worth it.”
While the work for this floor is completed, they are going to let the new activities simmer in the pot before moving on to any other project in the museum.
“We always give our exhibits time to settle, right? We go through the grand opening process. The kids are really excited,” Whisman said. “They’re playing really hard in the space. But then we’ll start to see how they do their second visit and their third visit.”
“We’ll actually stay in the space for a while, doing updates and little adjustments as we are ready for this to be a long-term part of our museum.”
