GOODFIELD, Ill. (WMBD) — A North Carolina woman was arrested recently by the Goodfield Police Department in connection with a fraud scheme that resulted in more than $39,000 being taken from more than 30 people.
William Lally, Goodfield’s police chief, said that Laylah Unique Blount, 19, of Kinston, N.C., was arrested on March 30 after Goodfield police officers, along with the local agency, raided her house and seized a number of cell phones, computers, and tablets.
The investigation took four months, the chief said, and started last November when a Goodfield officer took a report from a woman who said they had been told to redirect her paychecks to unknown bank accounts. The total amount was about $8,300, the chief said.
As the investigation continued, officers learned that accounts had other victims, totaling about $39,000. Additional investigative efforts led the police to identify Blount as a prime suspect.
The chief said Blount faces charges of aggravated ID theft, theft and fraudulent use of an electronic transmission. As of Tuesday morning, it did not appear she had been charged in Woodford County Circuit Court.
