NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — Heartland Community College announced the new dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, set to start at the end of the spring semester.
Karla Huffman has been a teacher for 28 years, ten years at HCC and 18 years at Illinois State University.
With the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences being HCC’s biggest program, Huffman hopes to continue creating the next generation of problem solvers.
“I want to make sure, though, that the critical thinking that people learn in liberal arts and social sciences, problem solving, and of course, communication and writing, and just being able to think. I want to make sure that that doesn’t go by the wayside, which it won’t, but I want to make sure it’s also recognized,” said Huffman.
She also wants to continue to inform the community about the college and how it will produce civically engaged workers once they graduate.
“I want the community to know that the liberal arts and social sciences is the degree that will help people become the civically engaged community members that we want. It will help them figure out, you know, when there are problems. We are the people who are going to help with that,” she said.
Huffman is currently an Associate Professor of Communication and Civic Engagement Faculty Coordinator. She will be taking on the new role as Dean at the end of this spring semester.
