PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Gas for the Peoria area has risen to more than $4 a gallon on average, according to a website that monitors gas prices.
According to the GasBuddy website, which surveys 148 stations in the Peoria area, the average price of gas was $4.02 a gallon. That’s up 34.4 cents from last week.
That’s almost $1.16 higher than a month ago and 75.2 cents a gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel also jumped, rising 27 cents last week to $5.22 a gallon. That is the highest since Nov. 24, 2022, the website said.
The cheapest place in the Peoria area, the website reported, was Casey’s, Road Ranger, and Minonk Fast Stop Express, all in Minonk, which reported $3.85 a gallon. The most expensive area station was $4.29 a gallon.
The average price of gas in the U.S. rose 24.3 cents to an average of $3.92 a gallon, while the state’s average was $4.16 a gallon, up 46.7 cents from last week.
“Gas prices continued to rise nationwide over the last week as seasonal factors, combined with ongoing supply concerns tied to the continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, pushed both gasoline and diesel prices sharply higher,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “It now appears increasingly likely that the national average price of gasoline will reach the $4-per-gallon mark—potentially as early as this week—for the first time since 2022, while diesel prices are surging to multi-year highs, with some markets nearing record territory.
“There are few signs of stabilization so far, as global oil prices continue to climb and early indications suggest consumers may begin to pull back in response to the rapid pace of increases,” he said.
Neighboring areas also saw an increase in gas prices, with Champaign averaging $3.98 a gallon, which is up 29.1 cents from last week.
The Quad Cities averages $3.43 a gallon, up 10.1 cents from last week.
