Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., slammed Democrats for dragging out the government shutdown and putting politics ahead of the American people, telling Newsmax on Wednesday that talk is growing on Capitol Hill about pushing through a longer-term continuing resolution.
Appearing on “Carl Higbie FRONTLINE,” Mace said the short-term CR that funded the government through Nov. 21 was never meant to become a recurring fix.
“That original continuing resolution was only to go through until Nov. 21,” Mace told Higbie. “So we’re now only weeks away from that. And now there’s talk about a longer-term continuing resolution.
“This puts off our ability to do appropriations.”
House Republicans had been working to advance 12 separate appropriations bills but ran out of time before the new fiscal year began on Oct. 1.
The House ultimately passed the CR to buy more time to finish the bills and restore regular order and accountability to the budget process — a goal Mace said has now been pushed further down the road with the Democrats’ refusal to pass it.
“Nobody wants a long-term CR,” Mace said. “I’d like us to get back to more appropriate spending levels. But right now this is just a Band-Aid.”
The South Carolina Republican criticized Democrats for what she described as a cynical political strategy designed to inflict pain on taxpayers while boasting about obstruction.
“Democrats have already voted for this 13 times previously under [former President] Joe Biden,” she said. “And they’re bragging about the pain they’re putting on the American people.
“Democrats — they just don’t even care.”
