NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — OPmobility, a high-tech bumper builder, will construct its first facility in the state at Rivian’s new Supplier Park.
The company will be assembling Rivian’s bumpers, with all of the tech components, for the EV maker’s R2 truck.
“This investment builds on Illinois’ growing EV ecosystem, and it demonstrates the power of programs like REV Illinois to support companies bringing good-paying jobs and innovative technology to our communities,” said Governor JB Pritzker.
Rivian’s new Supplier Park was announced in May. “We appreciate the State of Illinois’s partnership and support in helping attract key suppliers to the Normal area,” said Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe.
The investment is coming with support from the Department of Economic Opportunity’s Reimagining Energy and Vehicles in Illinois (REV Illinois) program. The company’s Normal-based operation will create 81 new full-time jobs.
The 2022 REV Illinois economic development initiative is providing OPmobility an estimated $3.6 million in tax credits for the facility.
OPmobility is a leader in sustainable mobility. The company builds exterior and lighting systems, complex modules, energy storage, as well as battery and hydrogen electrification, using advanced and smart solutions.
Its global footprint spans 150 industrial sites and 40 R&D centers, driving the transition to cleaner, more connected mobility through innovation and collaboration.
“This step reflects OPmobility’s commitment to scaling innovation and delivering value across key markets. The U.S. is a key pillar of our strategy, and we’re excited to deepen our presence in a market that continues to shape the future of mobility with this facility,” said Thibaut Stern, President of North America of OPmobility Exterior & Lighting.
“This facility will bring critical jobs and economic opportunities to our community while supporting the state’s vision for a sustainable future,” said Bloomington State Representative Sharon Chung.
It’s unclear when OPmobility might break ground. But Rivian’s founder and CEO gives a gentle nod to when it might be operational.
“Our Normal supplier park will provide improved material supply logistics as we increase production in 2026 to build R2, in addition to R1 and our commercial vans,” Scaringe said.
