BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — Housing was the controversial topic at Monday’s Bloomington City Council meeting.
City council members voted on three items and public comment ran long because of resolutions related to housing.
The first item to be passed was updates to the city’s zoning rules to remove unnecessary barriers. The impacted classifications include accessory dwelling units, some small-scale shops in higher-density residential areas and single-family homes above ground floor in the downtown transitional district.
Council members also approved a resolution making it easier for people to buy and own duplexes and town homes.
The last item approved was a resolution to give direction on a report from the urban design and architect company, Opticos Design, Inc. This item caused some confusion as the public thought the council would have to accept the report as is without further review. City staff clarified they would review the report and that was the purpose of the item being on the agenda.
Sheilia Montney and Kent Lee voted nay on all three items.
