NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — A home is now considered uninhabitable after a fire in Normal on Wednesday.
The fire occurred on Virginia Avenue near Linden Street at approximately 5:30 p.m., Normal Fire Spokesperson Matt Swaney said. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found heavy smoke coming from the building.
While fighting the fire, crews upgraded the incident and called in off-duty firefighters and assistance from the Bloomington Fire Department to help put out the fire. Virginia Avenue was closed from Hillcrest to Linden Streets while crews put out the fire.
All occupants left the house before firefighters arrived. One was injured and sent to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes.
“Any time there is a fire—especially one where someone loses so much—we urge everyone to check their smoke alarms and make sure they are working,” Swaney said. “If a fire like this had occurred while the occupant was sleeping, the outcome could have been deadly.”
The home suffered heavy heat, smoke and fire damage and has been deemed uninhabitable. The total cost of the damages is still being estimated.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
