BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — A local police department received state funding to support firearm enforcement.
The Bloomington Police Department received a $21,519.69 grant as part of the fourth round of Firearms enforcement grants for the 2026 fiscal year, according to a news release from the Illinois State Police.
Bloomington police were one of 21 law enforcement agencies in Illinois to receive a combined $1 million in this round of grants. The money will be used to conduct enforcement details against people legally barred from having a gun.
“Keeping Illinoisans safe is my top priority, and that includes keeping people safe from gun violence,” Governor JB Pritzker said. “I’m proud that we are providing local police departments across the state with the resources they need to ensure we keep deadly weapons out of the hands of those who pose a risk to themselves or their communities.”
The enforcement details focus on those who are subject to a Firearm Restraining Order, a Clear and Present Danger report, or have received a criminal conviction.
“Conducting enforcement details can be time-intensive and require additional resources,” ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly said. “These grants can help local law enforcement agencies pay for the details, which focus on ensuring individuals who pose a danger to the public or themselves do not have firearms in their possession.”
From 2023 to 2025, $3.5 million in grants have been given to 67 different law enforcement agencies across Illinois to help fund 21,515 compliance checks.
