BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — Grade school students ran around Timber Pointe at Lake Bloomington this week, enjoying the outdoors and making new friends during Camp Limberlost.
“I think a lot of them are learning how to react with other kids and how to behave properly, meeting new friends and seeing really good role models from their counselors,” said Paul Lawrence, co-chair of Camp Limberlost, representing the Bloomington Kiwanis.
Campers are able to participate in many different activities, including swimming, fishing, archery, horseback riding and ziplining, which the attendees love.
“I love camp! They’re very fun and positive. And I love my friends,” said Ca’Miyah Jones, a camper at Camp Limberlost.
These children can attend the camp at no cost to the families, due to Kiwani’s fundraiser efforts.
“The Kiwanis Club of Bloomington`s fundraising efforts have continued to make Camp Limberlost possible and have impacted the lives of many children. The children who attend Camp Limberlost are recommended by their schools and attend camp at zero cost to the family,” said Sonya Weber, Co-Chair of the camp.
Only 60 children attend this camp each year, who are selected by their schoolteachers who believe they could benefit from the experience, and benefit they do, as adults reach out to the camp to let them know how much it has impacted them.
“It’s funny because a lot of times when we talk about Camp Limber lost in Bloomington, we’ll hear from people that have gone to camp and they will tell us what a great experience that they had and how it really benefited them when they were growing up at a very impressionable age,” Lawrence said.
