NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — On Thursday, an open house was hosted at Heartland Community College for the Workforce Equity Initiative.

Prospective students met with staff to learn about the admissions process and certificate programs. Former students including a mom and formerly incarcerated man shared testimonials about how the program has helped them create a better life.

Garrett Ahlfield graduated last week after completing the shielded metal arc welding certification. He’s already loving his job. He said people considering the program should not hesitate to apply.

“To anybody considering the program, I’d say, just do it. Stop waiting. And everything’s under a year. Years go by quick, you know, go ahead and put one of them to use and let the rest of your years of your life be good,” he said. “If you’re thinking about it, stop thinking about it. Just do it.”

Students eligible for the WEI grant will receive funding for tuition, career navigation and success coaching. To learn more about the program, click here.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
