NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — When you think of volunteering at a hospital, you may think of helping nurses and doctors save lives and operate on patients.

Something that may not come to mind is volunteering to sing to patients, but that is exactly what Darla Glover does at Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal.

“When I saw her application and we visited for the first time, I thought, wow, we could really use this,” said Sue Seibring, manager of volunteer services at Carle.

Glover is a classically trained opera singer, but she can sing any genre, any song and any request a patient may have. Seibring recalls when Glover once had to go from AC/DC to a staff member’s request of Patsy Cline.

“About eight years ago, when I was living up north, I started singing in memory care units, nursing home, volunteering, and then hospice,” said Glover. “Then I just really was seeing like, this wasn’t performing. Music heals.”Bloomington Career Center students help rebuild future space

People ask Glover why she does what she does, and for her its a spiritual connection to her faith and love of music.

“I just feel like God propelled me cause people are like, ‘why did you contact the hospital?’” she said. “I can’t really tell you, but I just felt led that this needs to be something done.”

Glover sings for anyone in any kind of condition. She recalled singing for a woman who

“One woman was getting ready for a vascular test and she was very nervous,” Glover said. “Her husband was there, her daughter, she wanted some hymns. They were all singing with me.”

By the time the doctor came in the room to get the woman, she was confident in her procedure, which amazed the doctor.

“Darla, I hope, is going to start adding some more recruitment bases,” said Seibring, “maybe getting more volunteers because you know everybody, we do need more to be able to do this.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
