NORMAL – Normal Police Department received a grant just in time for National Crime Prevention Month.

The $750,000 grant comes from the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services.

Normal’s police department is currently fully staffed with 88 officers. The grant allows for the hiring of six new officers.

“With the growth of the Bloomington-Normal area, Normal PD definitely needs to stay with that growth as far as officers being hired,” Public Information Officer Brad Park. “We’re always looking for new young officers to come on the department to also replace those that are retiring. But we are very busy department. Our numbers have been going up and up every year. And so, the additional officers will be very impactful for the community.”

Park said NPD hopes to fill all six positions within a year.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
