BLOOMINGTON – For Illinois Wesleyan University’s President-elect, returning to Central Illinois is a full-circle moment.

In 2005, Dr. Sheahon Zenger was Illinois State University’s Director of Athletics.

After a two-year stent, Dr. Zenger moved on to the University of Kansas and several others before moving back to the twin cities.

“Years ago when I came here in 2005, I started watching from afar all things at Illinois Wesleyan,” Dr. Zenger said on WJBC’s Afternoon show, which airs weekdays from 4 – 6 p.m. “I was on their campus for family events and different activates. I saw it as a place that I wish I would (have) gone to school as a student and my children would have gone to school because I’m a firm believer in liberal arts education.”

In a full circle moment, Dr. Zenger hired ISU football coach Brock Spack 19-years ago, and he remains the head coach.

“He’s been great for our family,” Spack told WJBC’s Scott Miller. “(I’m) very happy for him. I just texted him in the car. To see him on that stage, I think this is the perfect school for him. A smaller, a very traditionally riched university that has a lot of, you know he loves athletics, but he loves higher education. I think he’s going to be a homerun hit.”

Dr. Zenger comes to IWU with more than 30-years of experience in higher education leadership.

He begins his role as President on July 1.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
