Toys for Tots: 75th Anniversary

Each year Toys for Tots of McLean County collects and distributes toys to thousands of children in need in our area.

Toys of Tots knows that no child deserves to wake up on Christmas morning without a toy under their tree and we are asking for your help this holiday season to make it special for the kids in McLean County.

WJBC is asking our listeners to help Toys for Tots of McLean County collect donations of new, unwrapped toys for the kids in our area. With several ways and places to give, there is something for everyone to participate in.

How to support the 2022 Toys for Tots campaign:

  • Drop off new, unwrapped toys at O’Brien Kia of Bloomington (1608 Morrissey Dr. in Bloomington)
  • Visit one of the many drop box locations in town
  • Give a monetary donation online by CLICKING HERE
  • Visit Denny’s Doughnuts & Bakery between November 7th – December 18th to order a coffee cake – a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Toys for Tots of McLean County
    • This year’s featured flavors are cherry, cream cheese, caramel pecan, and blueberry!
  • Drive-Thru Toy Drive at Texas Roadhouse on Saturday, November 26th rom 1:00-5:00pm
    • Donate a new, unwrapped toy and receive a free appetizer certificate from Texas Roadhouse
  • Farm & Fleet Toy Stop with WJBC on Thursday, December 1st from 4:00 to 6:00pm

Thank you to WJBC’s sponsor: O’Brien Kia of Bloomington.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
