BLOOMINGTON – Holiday travel is on the rise across central Illinois. Still, officials at Central Illinois Regional Airport (CIRA) say to make sure not to forget a face-covering before boarding a flight.

Earlier this week, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) extended federal requirements that travelers wear a face-covering during commercial flights until March 18.

“We are excited that travel is back, but there are still rules in place,” CIRA Deputy Director Fran Strebing told WJBC’s, Scott Miller. “The biggest one is the mask requirement, that has been extended until March. You’re going to need to wear a mask through your whole journey, so as soon as you enter the airport and throughout your air travel experience and whether your connecting, whatever your destination, that is a federal requirement.”

According to Strebing, air travel at CIRA airport is nearing 2019 holiday travel numbers.

“We want to make sure that people are prepared. And allow yourself extra time. This is the holiday season, we are back to busy times, and that means fuller airplanes. We have some large airbuses that come in and out on Frontier and Allegiant that holds 177-180 people. And when everyone is trying to get through at the same time, it can be a problem.

You want to make sure you don’t have any issues; get there early and pack accordingly.”

TSA agents screened just under 21 million travels during the Thanksgiving holiday. The agency expects higher numbers during the December holidays.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
