NORMAL – Week 5 of high school football this week and our main game Friday night on WJBC is U-High against Chatham Glenwood.

The Pioneers are 2-2 on the season, which includes a forfeit win, but U-High got its first victory on the turf last week at Springfield Southeast. It was also the first win for new head coach Brody Walworth.

“The thing that made me most happy is just the things we are trying to preach we are starting to see pay off,” said Walworth. “That is my favorite part as a coach, I think the players are bought in to what we are trying to do here.”

Around the Intercity in Week 5: Normal Community (4-0) hosts Champaign Central, the Wildcats of Normal West (3-1) hit the road to face Peoria Notre Dame, Central Catholic (3-1) will try to bounce back as they host Tolono Unity, and Bloomington (2-2) is home against Peoria Richwoods.

Other games around the area:

Ridgeview @ El Paso-Gridley, Dee-Mack @ Fisher, GCMS @ Eureka, Heyworth @ Tri-Valley, Fieldcrest @ LeRoy, Prairie Central @ IVC, Monticello @ Pontiac, St. Joseph Ogden @ Olympia, Clinton @ Decatur St. Teresa

All of our high school football coverage Friday night starts with the pregame at 6:10 p.m. then kickoff from Hancock Stadium at 7.

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
