SPRINGFIELD – The food you whip up at home could be sold more easily, under a proposal awaiting the governor’s action.
The Illinois Farm Buerau is backing a “home to market” bill, says the bureau’s director of food systems development, Raghela Scavuzzo.
“‘Cottage food’ is the opportunity for farms and food businesses to make certain value-added products out of their house,” Scavuzzo said. “This might be baked goods, jams, and jellies, pickles, all sorts of goods that they can make from their homes rather than go to a commercial kitchen, which is often really expensive.”
The bill would standardize safety rules statewide.
SB 2007 awaits the governor’s action.
