SPRINGFIELD – During this Pride Month, Illinois’ child welfare agency is highlighting a restructuring meant to provide more support for the LGBTQI + community.
LGBTQI + stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer / Questioning, Intersex, and more.
The chief of this newly constituted division, Marla Courts, says while life has improved over the past decades for those in the gay community, they still face discrimination. Imagine the added burden of being a young person in the system.
“Studies have shown that approximately 30 percent of youth in care nationwide identify as LGBTQI +, and many youth come into care when they are rejected by their families after coming out,” Courts said in a statement. “LGBTQI+ youth are more at risk of becoming homeless than their peers and they need welcoming, affirming and supportive families to care and advocate for them.”
Courts’ organization is seeking foster parents for LGBTQI + youth.
