NORMAL – As the summer comes closer, that means summer reading, and one local nonprofit is holding their annual book sale.

Books to Benefit Member Mary Ryder told WJBC’s Marc Strauss the sale offers various genres for all ages.

“We have a huge, huge collection of children’s works right now. I would remind you that all of our children’s books are 50 cents unless they are very rare, and then they show up in our special collections room. So that is a real bargain, especially since the kids are still at home and they’re looking forward to the summer and they have nothing to read; this is the place to come.”

Ryder adds that people can still donate gently used books to the Crossroads Center at 360 Wylie Drive in Normal.

“We just love to put books in people’s hands, so we want to keep that love of reading going and to improve literacy in the community. So come and visit us, and we will make sure to find something for you.”

Ryder said the organization is only allowing 50 patrons in at a time and is asking for patrons to wear a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines.

The sale hours are Thursday, June 3rd from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. $10 cover charge; Friday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., and Saturday, June 5th from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

More information on the sale can be found at books2benifit.com.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
