SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ top election official, ensnared in a computer misadventure, is retiring.
It’s been just two weeks since Steve Sandvoss, executive director of the Illinois State Board of Elections, was placed on administrative leave after reporting he was the victim of an online extortion attempt. At the time, the board said it did not believe election operations were compromised, and details of exactly what happened have not come out.
The retirement is effective June 30, though Sandvoss will remain on administrative leave. He’s been with the board since 1988 and previously was general counsel.
