NORMAL– A major freight train derailment occurred early Saturday morning between Vernon Avenue and Fell Street in Normal.
In a news release, the Normal Fire Department said there were no hazardous materials involved, and no injuries, but traffic was affected on many major rail crossings.
The public was asked to NOT approach the train, or the tracks in an attempt to take pictures or video.
Even though hazardous materials aren’t involved, power lines are down, and portions of the train or track may be energized and poses a electrocution hazard.
In addition, the fire department reminds that it is unlawful to trespass on railroad property and may result in fines or arrest.
Railroad crossings were closed at University St., Fell St., Broadway St., Linden St., College Ave., Mulberry St., Beech St. and Willow St./Fort Jesse Rd.
The railroad underpass at Vernon Avenue and Beaufort Street was also closed.
This incident will be an extended operation and updates will be made as soon as information is available.
