SPRINGFIELD – The senator who makes his home in Springfield says former President Trump should be held accountable for what happened Jan. 6 – the Capitol insurrection. Dick Durbin Friday took a question about whether lawmakers – as the Speaker of the House said this week – fear for their safety.
“I take it seriously I don’t think it was a political demonstration,” Durbin said. “That was an act of terrorism. That’s why I listen carefully when law enforcement decides to warn us, and I lead my life accordingly. I’m happy to say that I have good people that are watching out for me and my family and I thank them very much.”
Durbin said all you need to know about how serious this is, in addition to the fact that people died in the riot, is that the federal government requested 500 Illinois National Guard soldiers for six weeks.
Trump’s impeachment trial begins Feb. 9.
Durbin held a Zoom call with reporters to talk about the federal government’s expansion of the COVID vaccine roll-out.
