BLOOMINGTON – Two additional McLean County residents have died from coronavirus complications.

McLean County Health Department Administrator Jessica McKnight said it was a woman in her 60s and a man in his 70s, both associated with long-term care facilities. There have been 16 COVID-related deaths reported this week, and now 85 lives lost in the county.

MCHD announced 117 new cases Friday. There are 24 McLean County residents in the hospital due to COVID and 1,117 are isolating at home. McLean County hospitals are reporting 88% of ICU beds in use and 85% of total beds in use.

The county’s rolling positivity rate inched up to 9.5%. 733 news cases of COVID-19 have been reported in McLean County over the last week. An age breakdown of the cases:

  • Under 1: 4
  • 1-17: 85
  • 18-19: 22
  • 20s: 114
  • 30s: 97
  • 40s: 97
  • 50s: 87
  • 60s: 74
  • 70s: 60
  • 80s: 59
  • 90s: 32
  • 100s: 2

MCHD provided an update on Region 2 and where we stand to remove Tier 3 mitigations. A region must experience less than 12 percent positivity rate for three consecutive days and greater than 20 percent available intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital bed availability and declining 7-day average COVID hospitalizations in 7 out of the last 10 days.

  • Percent positivity for three consecutive days – 5 consecutive days under 12% (7-day rolling average) – We meet this metric.
  • Greater than 20 percent available ICU and hospital bed availability for 3 consecutive days– 19.7% ICU beds and 24.6% med/surg beds – We do not meet this metric, but we are close.
  • Declining 7-day average COVID hospitalizations in 7 of the last 10 days – 5 days of COVID hospitalized patient decreases. – We do not meet this metric.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
