BLOOMINGTON – A woman and two cats died Thursday night in a house fire on Bloomington’s east side.
Bloomington fire crews were called around 7:45 p.m. to the 500 block of Kreitzer Avenue after neighbors saw smoke and flames coming from the back of the building.
In a release, the department said additional neighbors notified dispatch that someone may be still inside. Due to the conditions, the Bloomington Battalion Chief upgraded the alarm, calling in additional crews from Bloomington and Normal.
Firefighters located heavy flames in the area of the kitchen. Crews found the woman unconscious and she was taken outside where life saving measures were started. However, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity is being withheld until family is notified.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. At this time its presumed to be accidental.
