BLOOMINGTON – Despite COVID-19, volunteers with Habitat for Humanity of McLean County are rolling up their sleeves and getting back to work building homes.

Speaking with WJBC’s Scott Miller, McLean County Habitat for Humanity Development Director Linda Healy said while volunteers are practicing social distancing, they are excited to get back to work.

“It’s brutally hot, so putting on a face mask is just one more layer of heat, but our guys, our retired crew they are amazing. They are so dedicated to helping habitat build homes. We couldn’t do it without them…They are going to start in small groups, small groups, and start slowly a couple of mornings a week to see how things go. We want to make sure everyone is safe – priority number one.

Meanwhile, Healy said Chairs for Change; a decorated chair auction will go on as planned in November.

“It is still going to happen; at this point, we are still crossing our fingers that it is going to be live. Everything is kind of up in the air; it may be online that is certainly an option. We have held other events for online auctions, we have the tools to do that, but we are very excited to do this. This is a partner with Recycling Furniture for Families, we are both benefiting from it, and we have given out 100 chairs in the community. People are painting (them), and we get them back, and we auction them off.”

Community members are encouraged to go to HabitatforChange.org to participate in the Chairs for Change auction.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
