Social media hangs up weather alerts

It took several hours for service to return to the NWS (PHOTO: Pixabay)

As storms pushed through central Illinois Wednesday if you turned to Twitter for your updates from the National Weather Service you were out of luck.

A Bitcoin scam was making its way through the social media outlet and the hack caused Twitter to freeze a number of verified accounts as it worked through the issues.

The Daily Beast reports the National Weather Service was one of those accounts. The weather service uses a network of regional Twitter accounts to publish updates on severe weather so residents in areas experiencing severe weather can prepare.

The Lincoln, Illinois office was trying to tweet alerts about approaching weather but warning coordination meteorologist Chris Miller said it was a challenge.

Miller told The Daily Beast the problem comes if somebody relies on just one method to get their info, there’s a single point of failure, they won’t get that warning and it has the potential to put them in danger.

The bureau had issued a tornado warning for McLean County and was working to get that information to the public.

The National Weather Service said its Twitter access was restored after several hours Wednesday evening.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Is federal mobilization the answer?

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
