BLOOMINGTON – District 87 gave a brief update on its plan for the fall semester which includes an option for students to learn in-person or remotely at home.

According to a Facebook post Thursday, Superintendent Dr. Barry Reilly said families will choose between two options for their students for the entire fall semester — 100% in-person learning at school, or 100% remote learning at home.

“We understand that you have many questions about the return to school,” said Reilly. “We are hopeful that Monday’s release of the back-to-school plan will provide answers. The adaptability and flexibility of the entire District 87 community is appreciated as we prepare to begin a historic school year.”

The district said on Monday it will release its full plan for the fall semester through Skyward, D87 social media, and on www.district87.org/covid.

Here is some other information the district shared on Thursday:
• For the safety of students and staff, school supplies will be provided to students through the District and community partners.
• The first day of school has been moved to Monday, August 24 for students in PreK-5, 6th, and 9th grade. All other students will begin Tuesday, August 25.
• To receive the most up-to-date information, your student must be registered for the upcoming school year. For more information, visit www.district87.org/registration.
• In addition to the back-to-school document, District 87 will host several Family Webinars in August so guardians can tune in to hear information directly from school leaders.
McLean County’s largest school district, Unit 5, is expected to release its plan for the fall sometime next week.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
