BLOOMINGTON – Designed to teach kids the foundations of hockey, members of the Chicago Blackhawks staff donated equipment and training sessions to Washington Elementary School.

The GOAL or Get Out And Learn program provides schools with a full set of floor hockey equipment for the school, including 30 sticks, 30 balls, 30 jerseys, and two nets.

“This is an initiative the NHL and the Chicago Blackhawks have to help get hockey into schools in a specific time where the state is facing a budget, and the equipment is very expensive,” said Washington Physical Education Teacher Austin Meyers.

Washington Elementary School was one of the few schools chosen outside of Chicago because a Bloomington-Normal native works for the team and was able to bring them here.

“It has been awesome so far to see them (Chicago Blackhawks staff and students) interact with each other,” added Myers. “I think the exciting part for me is getting to see the kids getting to play with people who are much more skilled than myself and learning from people who can teach them the basics in a much more simple way.”

For students, new equipment allows a spark of interest to ignite for hockey and the Chicago Blackhawks.

“I take this as an honor to be honest because they are such a big team in this tiny town, and I take this as an honor,” said fifth-grade student Gisel Lee. “I thank them so much, and I think this is a cool experience for us.”

For students like Ruby Moore, new equipment means learning more.

“This is just amazing. We’ve not had great materials,” Moore added. “This is just amazing to have, and I am very thankful that they were able to give us all this new stuff.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
