BLOOMINGTON – The holiday season has brought a spike in gas prices.

The AAA Weekly Fuel Gauge shows that prices Monday in the Twin-Cities are $2.59 a gallon, up from $1.91 a year ago, and more expensive compared to $2.47 a week ago.

Other gas prices Monday around the area include $2.56 in Champaign, $2.62 in Peoria, and in Springfield $2.48.

AAA said a majority of states saw gas prices increase in the last week – some by as much as a nickel to a dime, but any spikes in gas prices that motorists are seeing will be short-lived. AAA expects gas prices to decrease following the holidays.

In 2019, the national gas price average was $2.61, which is ten cents cheaper than the 2018 average of $2.71, according to the fuel gauge.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
