SPRINGFIELD – The legislature’s point man on sports betting says he hopes things will be up and running by March Madness. Along with the Super Bowl, State Rep. Mike Zalewski (D-Riverside) says the NCAA basketball tournament is a tentpole of sports wagering.
“I think the third is the first weekend of NFL football in the fall,” Zalewski said. “But March Madness – man, we really hope we can accomplish that goal. That would make it a fun March around here.”
As long as you don’t want to bet on the Illini, Illinois State, Loyola, or any other Illinois-based teams. That’s against the rules. Zalewski says Nevada does it a similar way.
Once it’s all up and running, the sports gambling sites will be limited.
“You’re only going to be able to go to your nearest riverboat, racetrack, or OTB,” Zalewski said. “Eventually, in 18 months, you’re going to be able to do it on your phone or computer. There is going to be a healthy mix of brick-and-mortar and online.”
Zalewski says a Gaming Board with a new staff and a full plate is unlikely to get this all processed by February’s Super Bowl.
