SPRINGFIELD – Representatives of the state’s manufacturers are calling on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to allow trade deals to move forward after a trip to Washington.
Illinois Manufacturers’ Association President Mark Denzler and almost two dozen other members of the state’s manufacturing industry spent last week talking to members of Illinois’ congressional delegation and others, pressing them to approve trade agreements and reauthorize the Export-Import Bank which helps American businesses facilitate international trade.
Illinois’ economy, Denzler said, relies heavily on the passage of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement, which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has yet to act on.
“Right now, the ball really sits in Speaker Pelosi’s court,” he said. “I think Republicans are generally supportive and we’re really hoping that Democrats in the Illinois delegation will push the speaker to call that for a vote in October.”
Another hot topic in Washington is a potential federal infrastructure bill, which Illinois would be well-suited to take advantage compared to previous years where Denzler said the state has missed out due to lack of a plan.
“Illinois has lost dollars in the past because we didn’t have a program,” he said. “We’re now ahead of the curve.”
Lawmakers return to Washington on Oct. 15.
