Central Catholic has come up just short in the first two weeks of the season, a trend the Saints hope ends with a Week 3 visit to St. Joseph-Ogden in the featured game of the WJBC Friday Night High School Football Extravaganza.

Saints coach Kevin Braucht said he’s seen progress after a winless 2018 but losing two heartbreakers still stings.

“We had a chance to win Week 1 and Week 2 with the ball at the end of the game,” Braucht said. “I think I would have taken that in February if you told me that in the first two weeks we’d have a chance to win in the fourth quarter with the ball in your possession. It’s bittersweet now because I feel we could have gotten both of those.”

The first-year Saints coach hopes that progress continues against the 2-0 Spartans.

“If we make the same improvement that we made from Week 1 to Week 2 from 2 to 3, I think we’ll be in the same position where in the fourth quarter we’ll have an opportunity to win the ball game,” Braucht said.

In the other games on the Extravaganza, Normal West (1-1) tries to bounce back after a Chili Bowl loss to rival Normal Community with the Intercity’s lone home game of the week against Danville (1-1). Bloomington (1-1) faces Manual Academy (0-2) at Peoria Stadium, Normal Community (2-0) rides Interstate 74 east to Urbana (0-2) and U-High (0-2) travels south to Decatur to face MacArthur (1-1).

The Extravaganza pre-game begins at 6:05 p.m. on AM 1230 WJBC and WJBC.com with updates from all reporters every quarter hour and post-game coverage until 11 p.m. Scores can be found on Twitter (@SportsWJBC) throughout the night.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
