SPRINGFIELD – So far, 2019 is turning out to be a dud in the farm fields.
USDA Illinois statistician Mark Schleusener says there could be a rebound.
“They are certainly working hard. The two days suitable for field work last week were Saturday and Sunday. Farmers are racing planting as much as they can,” said Schleusener. “Producers are trying to get corn into the ground by June 5. June 5 is an important date when it comes to insurance and such like that.”

Schleusener says planting after tomorrow is a disadvantage both economically and agronomically. Corn and soybeans are 32 percent emerged and 13 percent emerged respectively.
